Treditional Korean Barbecue  Tonggalbi  통갈비 바베큐!

 prep time : 1 HOUR   cook time : 20 MINUTES    total time : 1 hour 20 MINUTES

 yields :  SERVES 4                                          

 

Ingredients

 

  • 5 pounds tong kalbi beef

  • 1 cup low sodium soy sauce, check for gluten free labels if needed

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup aji-mirin

  • 1 cup water

  • 1/8 teaspoon kiwi, crushed

  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced or grated

  • 1/2 a large white onion, sliced thin

  • 1/2 tablespoon pepper

  • 1 cup sesame oil

 

Instructions

 

Tong kalbi                                                                                                               

Trip the fat off of the tong kalbi beef. Cut in the middle over the bone

and slice lengthwise to create a long piece of tong kalbi beef. Hammer the beef as thinly as you can.

 

In a large bowl mix together low sodium soy sauce, sugar, aji-mirin, water, kiwi, garlic, sliced white onion, pepper, and sesame oil. Combine tong kalbi beef and marinade and mix well. Roll up each piece of tong kalbi beef. Cover and store in fridge for at last 30 minutes. Can be stored in fridge for 2-3 days.

 

Preheat the oven 500 F. Remove the tong kalbi beef from the fridge and bring to room temperature. Broil the tong kalbi beef on a roasting tray, turning them 1-2 times throughout cooking for about 10-12 minutes.

 

To serve, double up your lettuce leaves, add scallion salad, and kalbi. Delicious!
